Research

After creating the annotated bibliography, I found a lot of diverse and interesting sources relating to my research topic. Many of the sources related to graphic design concepts or typography specifically, which I think is a good direction for me. I want to focus on these ideas as an art form because neither the "real world" nor, often times, the art world view design as art because of its position in business. So my research question is looking like:

How can graphic design and typography theory be integrated, accepted and developed as an art form within art and art education?

  1. We have this book at my library and I think you would find it interesting. Get it through an inter-library loan if yours doesn't have it. It's really cool and would be great images to show students and spark a creative project.

  2. I think what has happened with the "arts" is that society has to justify the purpose, graphic design is associated with business and advertising. You have one foot in the door. Yet, it has a fascinating connection with the written word and design throughout history and the visual culture. Is graffiti associated? It would make a great cross-curricular study.

  3. Point of clarification - are you researching "How can" or "How are?"
