Allison Week 4 Reflection

Last weekend I sat down with an incredible resource, Bev Wolf, former Head of Hamlin Robinson, Author of “Teaching students with Dyslexia and Dysgraphia”. She has so much experience with dyslexia and has written articles on creativity and dyslexia. She was so gracious and a tremendous help in assisting me to solidify my ideas and topic. I am hopeful and excited that I will have a chance to use my independent study class to conduct my case study. This will give me time to do the study, record, gather and present in a professional manner the results. My thoughts as of now are:

Art elicits higher thinking skills and uses multiple intelligences, allowing dyslexic students to experience the visual and tactile stimuli that create memories for them. For many this hands-on, risk-free experience can boost a student’s motivation and becomes a powerful tool for self-expression and self-esteem. It is their way to personally connect and interpret what they are learning by capitalizing on their strengths.

In my research project I will attempt to show the importance of how the artistic process assists in communicating the thoughts of dyslexic students.

4 part study

1. In their home room, with their home room teacher facilitating, the students would participate in a short 5-100 word expressive writing exercise with a topic prompt.

2. in the art room, the students would participate in an artistic expressive project with the same topic prompt.

3.In their home room, with their home room teacher facilitating, the students would re-write their short expressive writing with the same prompt.

4. the students would participate in individual open-ended interviews to reflect on the process, learning environments and styles.

I would like to bring all of this information together in a webpage for the final product of my independent study and eventually aid my capstone project.

  1. Wow! It's really awesome that you have an expert working with you. This will help validate your research and captstone project.
I like the way you are having the students continue their art leaning into their homeroom. I'm a strong believer of integration and cooperation in all subjects, not jus art helping others, but other subjects helping art become more important.

  2. I am so glad you have her as a resource to guide you related to the content of your study. I can help advise methods better than to talk with you about dyslexic students. I guess it takes a village to raise a researcher. :)

  3. Allison - don't forget to label your posts with both your name and the assignment. I just labeled this one for you. Make sure the others are labeled - otherwise it can be hard to find them amidst the hundreds of other posts and I might miss giving you credit. If you need to know how to label them, check out my first post by clicking on "leslie" in the right hand column.
