This week's reading reminded me of a poem I read about creativity. It's written in a similar way as the poetic rendering of a sociological reseach by Lauren Richardson. Even though this "Little Boy" poem is not the result of a research, I can see art teachers using this method.
Here's a link to a video someone made from the poem. I think it's neat!

School Arts Magazine sent me a scan (PDF) of the poem that appeared in their 1961, October issue. I can email it to anyone who's interested.
I still remember the first time I read this poem. The poem is one you don't forget.
ReplyDeleteI have never seen that video before... Wow, Do some art teachers really still teach that way? I hope not! I remember one of my students telling me when I first started working as the art teacher that the old art teacher wouldn't let them use black because it wasn't a color.. I love black. It enhances everything around it! I couldn't live without black! Thanks for sharing Marie!
ReplyDeleteAllison,
ReplyDeleteI don't know if it's an art teacher in the poem or just a classroom teacher. I read this poem to librarians and preschool teachers who attend my art workshops. Yes, there are still a lot of people who think that way (maybe not too many in the art world)!
They think that children's art have to look "good" and have to look a certain way for them to feel like they gave a successful lesson. I think it's because they don't know how to teach art and how to let children explore with art tools. I think it falls under insecurity.
