During Fall A semester, I elected to take an independent study course in an area of interest stemming from an article I read during the History of Art Education course. The article talks about the different styles of art teachers (Hickman, 2001). In my experiences, I can usually tell what school/teacher a student’s piece of artwork comes from by the style of the piece. This has always interested me so I formed the question how does art teaching styles affect student artwork? I surveyed four art teachers, asked them a series of questions and analyzed their artwork. This process was a good exercise to learn the research process.
After speaking with our instructor and with a potential committee member, I have decided to explore the area of art teacher evaluation in Florida. I am working on posing questions. Some of which are: What tools can assist an administrator to evaluate the part of the art teacher evaluations that require classroom observation?

Andrea,
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting how the teacher style is passed on to the student. Im curious if this happens in other subject areas as well...It's easier to see in art because there is generally a product that reflects the style. But maybe, for instance, math teachers affect the way students learn and understand math and in some instances they may not be able to learn the way they are being taught...just thinking outside of my head....Hmmmm.
This is a huge topic that needs to be researched, especially in light of all of the news about teacher compensation and tenure. Best of luck to you!
Hi Andrea -
ReplyDeleteNo news to report but want to let you know that I'm still in support of you researching the teacher evaluation idea. Remember that the emotional response you have to it is likely going to help your research rather than taint it...it will be motivating when nights get long and your to-do list for your research feels never-ending.
don't forget to label your posts with both your name and the assignment. I just labeled this one for you. Make sure the others are labeled - otherwise it can be hard to find them amidst the hundreds of other posts and I might miss giving you credit.
